Winter 2021 Seascape - 5 “After Eunice 2, A bigger splash at Splash Point” - Acrylics on Canvas
The forth of a series of 6 paintings of the Sussex seascape as seen at East Beach Studios.
Painted during February 2022, the day after Storm Eunice (Sunday 20th). The wind was still blowing at about 40-50mph (I think it was actually the start of Storm Franklin coming through), very few people were about on the seafront.
Spending time on the beach making charcoal, pencil and white paint sketches of the pier and the rocks, feeling the wind, rain and sea on my skin and tools as I was sitting too close to the rising tide. Once sodden through with a number of sketches upon which to base a work did I return to the studio to paint the way I felt and the energy of the storm.
Working very quickly in acrylics, mimicking the processes I use on smaller works when working outside, I used as much energy as possible with vigorous gestural marks. I stopped as soon as the painted felt right, saying what I wanted to about how the storm felt to me on the beach.
